The NAASC Columbia, MD chapter was organized on September 20, 1975, by Ora Sterling Anderson (King). Nine other area Spelman College alumnae joined Mrs. Ora Sterling Anderson (King) and pledged their commitment of dedicated service to Spelman College as members of the new chapter.

Once established, the NAASC Columbia, MD chapter developed goals and objectives for becoming visible in the local community. The NAASC Columbia, MD chapter quickly began active recruitment efforts for Spelman College; fostered sisterhood among alumnae; developed leaders at the local, regional, and national levels of NAASC; and implemented activities designed to secure scholarship funds for Maryland area Spelman students.

In an effort to support Maryland Spelman students, the NASSC Columbia, MD chapter hosts annual fundraising activities. The first scholarship given by the NAASC Columbia, MD chapter was awarded in 1980. The chapter then began awarding two scholarships annually in 1984. In 1988, several book awards, one $1,000 scholarship, and three $500 scholarships were awarded by the chapter. To date, more than $164,000 in scholarships and book awards have been provided to local area Spelman students by the NAASC Columbia, MD chapter. 2017ChapterPicture
